Who should NOT signup for a Gottman Couples Workshop?

Gottman Couples workshops are held in group settings and are multiple day events. They are based on the Gottman Method, a research-based therapy method developed by the Gottmans and explained in this blog post. Couples tend to get a lot out of workshops, but if your mental load is already heavy, it may not be for you right now. Here are some things to consider:

  1. Severe Relationship Issues

    • If a couple is dealing with severe relationship problems, ongoing abuse, or significant mental health issues, they may find that individual therapy or counseling is more appropriate than a workshop.

  2. Individual Mental Health Concerns

    • If one or both partners are dealing with significant individual mental health concerns that require individual therapeutic attention, they may benefit more from seeking individual counseling alongside couples therapy.

  3. Immediate Crisis Situations

    • Couples in immediate crisis, such as those dealing with recent trauma or a recent major life event, may need more immediate and targeted therapeutic support before engaging in a workshop setting.

  4. Unwilling Participants

    • The workshop is most effective when both partners are willing participants. If one partner is unwilling or resistant to attending, it may be more challenging to derive the full benefits.

If you are experiencing any of these and would like a more personalized, private approach, Jonathan offers couples intensive retreats that may be better suited to your situation.

It's important to note that while the workshop provides valuable education and tools, it is not a substitute for therapy in cases where deeper emotional or psychological issues need to be addressed. Couples should assess their own needs and readiness for a workshop setting and, if necessary, seek individual or couples therapy for more tailored support.
